Roald Dahl’s most famous work, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, spawned a sequel, a great movie and a twisted, horrible movie. The original story was far sicker than the published and famous version. In the published book there are five competition winners going on a tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, with four meeting ironic punishments and the virtuous one winning out. On the other hand, the original story had several more chapters with more children in it. After you finish reading the original version you will wonder why Dahl was not sent to an insane asylum.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of Australia’s greatest novels. The book tells the story of a group of girls who disappear while climbing Hanging Rock. One of the girls mysteriously returns with no memory of what happened. Soon after her arrival the town suffers from mysterious events, death and fires. The mystery is not revealed until, the last chapter simply describing the events and demise of the town. The original version has a last chapter where it is explained that the girls got into a trance while climbing the rock and found a hole in time. Three of them entered and transformed into crabs and the fourth one is stopped by a falling rock.

The book of Malcom X was names as one of the most important books of the twentieth century. What is funny in this situation is that three of the chapters were removed and those three chapeters were considered ‘most impactful’.

The second book of Lewis Carroll was meant to out-do Alice in wonderland and was based around the game of chess which helped make that popular. Many of the characters ultimately influenced popular songs, such as “I am the Walrus,” by obscure British band the Beatles.

The author of The time machine, H.G. Wells, wrote one of the first Science Fiction novel. The story involved a Victorian Englishman who invents a time machine and travels 800,000 years into the future. He discovers that man has become two distinct species. The small, pinkish Eloi (ruling class) and Morelocks (hairy underdogs). After much adventure he returns to the present day (around 1894).

J.K. Rowling considered two possible endings for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. In the end she chose a happy ending where Voldemort dies and Harry saves everyone. The alternative ending implied that Voldemort may have lived on as a statue in the grounds of Hogwarts.

Great Expectations is one of Charles Dickens’ most notable works and it tells the story of an English lad named Pip, as he grows in age and maturity. The book presents Pip helping criminals, finding love and watching old widows burn to death. In the last chapters, Pip finds back his old love and they live happily ever after. The original ending, Dickens thought of Pip meeting his severely stressed out and depressed old love. Her husband recently died and Pip has just lost all his money.

In 1890 Oscar Wilde caused a big stir when he showed this book to his editors in 1890. What upset the publishers were the many homoerotic passages that were not socially acceptable in Victorian England. Oscar Wilde was forced to remove the most hardcore scenes and write instead seven new chapters to dilute its effeminacy. While his book was selling like crazy, Wilde was sent to jail for his sexual tastes.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel is a highly influential horror book. What most of you don’t know is that Stoker removed the last chapter in the last minute. I this deleted chapter, Dracula’s castle falls apart as he dies, to hide the existence of vampires. But Stoker changed his mind suddenly leaving an open ending perhaps thinking that he might want to write a sequel.
